Semi final villa park. Minutes silence and up pops a man who had balls the size of the matchball.
Brings shivers down my spine watching it and remembering being there.
The atmosphere was set for us fans from that moment.
Thanks to that man who started it.

They did as they thought we were disrespecting the silence.
I'm not 100 percent sure but I think that west ham were the first team to ever sing then "managers name and team colours army" song and made it up for Johnny Lyall.
So it's like terrace legendry I suppose.
They cut the minutes silence short as well.
Also that day was great. They brought west ham out to bubbles and we all sang. Then they brought boro out to an up to date song which was a chart song. And West ham started singing that. They started booing us for that as well.
Silly thing but they day and atmosphere couldn't have been better for us

Definitely Lyall.
At the time, Redknapp was a decent manager for us. It was only later that he became a cunt.
Pardew was great for a season.

Lyall for me
I enjoyed periods of Redknapp and Pards.
One of things strangely that made me proud to be West Ham fan as a kid as we had the fewest managers in our football history.
Though the one I detested the most was Curbs even more than BFS

never watched greenwood's teams other than on video so it would have to be Lyall, closely followed by Redknapp. Lyall for the style of football and for him being such a class act as a fella, Bagpuss for bringing some interesting players to the club in amongst the shit and Metz away :.)

I never really understood why Cearns sacked Lyall rather than give him an upstairs job as happened with Greenwood before he got the England job. After his years service as a player, coach then manager,Lyall didn't deserve the brutal treatment he got in 1989. He bought some crap players after the Boys of 86 started breaking up, but the transfer funds available were poor. The club changed forever after Lyall left, and not for the better.

John Lyall
When I was a kid, my Dad wrote to the club asking if I could meet the players before an away game, (Stoke City) - was one of the best days I've had, despite us losing 3-1 - time he took out just to introduce a kid to the team etc, before a big game - that sort of stuff means a lot to you when you're that age and always remember it.

John Lyall for sure but I wanted Bilic above all other options in the summer (and before) and I reckon he might one day surpass even the great Johnny Lyall... early days though!
